In the beginning was the Word;
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
All things were created through Him,
and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.
Life was in Him,
and that life was the light of men. (John 1:1-4, hcsb)
The Bible is clear: Jesus is the Son of God. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was crucified, died for our sins, rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven to reign at the right hand of God.
Yet it will only be a matter of time before you will meet people who will try to convince you otherwise. It will only be a matter of time before you meet people who will tell you they believe in Jesus, only for you to discover that their religion actually believes that He was just a good man. You may have already met such people.
Of course, it is impossible for Jesus to have just been a good man. Many times, He made radical statements such as this one:
The one who believes in Me believes not in Me, but in Him who sent Me. And the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. I have come as a light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me would not remain in darkness. If anyone hears My words and doesn’t keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. The one who rejects Me and doesn’t accept My sayings has this as his judge: the word I have spoken will judge him on the last day. For I have not spoken on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a command as to what I should say and what I should speak. I know that His command is eternal life. So the things that I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me. (John 12:44-52, hcsb)
In these eight verses, Jesus claims that believing in Him is the equivalent of believing in God and that seeing Him is the same as seeing God. He said He is the light of the world and that He came to save the world. He goes on to say that anyone who doesn’t believe in Him will be judged, that His words are God’s words, and that they are everlasting!
If Jesus wasn’t God, and wasn’t the Savior of the world, and wasn’t all He claimed, then the label good man wouldn’t be fitting. Something more like—oh, I don’t know—liar, freak, or idiot would be more fitting to someone who made such absurd claims!
